Cruise Industry Comment; Focus on Alaska; The Luxury Travel Fair; And a World Cruise Like No Other

October 2009 ‘Cruise News’ from Mundy Cruising - the leading UK specialist in international, quality cruising, tailor-making luxury holidays to suit the needs of the discerning customer. Of the comprehensive travel destination features, ship reports, industry news columns and comment from Mundy’s knowledgeable Managing Director Edwina Lonsdale, content highlights this month include:

** EDWINA LONSDALE ON THE SUBJECT OF MISLEADING PRICING; AND LOOKING TO 2010 WITH OPTIMISM (page 2):

Edwina Lonsdale welcomes and endorses the move away from the marketing practices of recent years, whereby huge discounts are applied to falsely inflated brochure prices.     The cruise sector with its range of exciting, varied and high quality products does itself no favours when going to market promoting discounts rather than value.

Thankfully the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) has come to the rescue in the UK, ensuring the practice of quoting a brochure fare which is never paid is brought to an end.

Looking optimistically to 2010, the cruise lines are pricing appropriately by offering the best deals to those who book early.

Luxury lines Silversea, the Yachts of Seabourn and Compagnie du Ponant are launching new ships within the next year and Oceania has released its Winter 2010/2011 programme.

** REJECT THE ORDINARY AT THE LUXURY TRAVEL FAIR 2009 (page 4):

For the fourth successive year, Mundy Cruising will be attending the Luxury Travel Fair at London’s Olympia from 5 – 8 November. A NEW theme from Mundy this year is the “Reject the Ordinary” programme, promoting the appeal of exploring the world on board a luxury ship, rather than choosing land-based, resort-style holidays.

At the show, a collection of the finest, inspirational holiday experiences from around the world will also combine with the Spirit of Christmas event – a great opportunity for visitors to discuss holiday plans at the same time as buying some of those festive gifts.

Partnered by Silversea, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and the Yachts of Seabourn, Mundy will be exhibiting on Stand No SD34 (opposite the Alpine Bar)

** ALASKA – DESTINATION FOCUS (pages 9-11, 14/15):

Cruise News has dedicated several pages this month to this extraordinary destination – from Top Ten Tips from Mundy Cruising, to highlighting the appeal of this magnificent Great Land –  how to get there, what to wear; and also details of an exclusive Mundy Cruising Alaska Experience holiday with cruise line partner Silversea.

This 16-night holiday in June 2010 combines a 6-night pre-cruise Rockies tour including  Vancouver with a 9-night Alaska cruise aboard Silver Shadow.

The voyage cruises the stunning Inside Passage and Sawyer Glacier and features visits to Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, Juneau and Victoria.

Departing the UK June 11, 2010 flying to Calgary, returning from Vancouver

Fly-cruise fares from £6,485 per person

Highlights include: exploring the Canadian Rockies by rail aboard the Rocky Mountaineer

Mundy Exclusives include: a Mundy Carte Blanche private tour of Sitka

** A WORLD CRUISE, LITERALLY LIKE NO OTHER (page 13):

Though the original concept of Cruise West was born over 60 years ago by Alaska pioneer Chuck West, today the philosophy of this privately-owned Seattle-based cruise line still remains the same – creating thoughtful itineraries to distinctive and unique destinations, many only accessible by ship; and of appeal to those looking for an enriching, yet casual environment.

In March 2010, Spirit of Oceanus, the flagship of Cruise West, will set sail on a world cruise – a collection of 24 individual voyages, making up a 355-day circumnavigation of the world. Sailing roundtrip from Singapore and departing on 5th March 2010, Spirit of Oceanus returns finally on February 3, 2011.

Cultural and historical experts will join each of the voyages, from the very first from Singapore to Chennai. These range from Laurence Bergreen, award-winning Marco Polo biographer and historian to Foreign Policy specialist Stephen Dachi, PhD and explorer Richard Bangs.
